  • Swartberg Pass and Montagu Pass are narrow gravel mountain roads. Check road status and weather before driving, and avoid them after heavy rain or in the dark.
  • Book the Franschhoek Wine Tram, the Meerkat Adventures sunrise tour and the Plettenberg Bay whale-watching boat in advance. Bring cash or a card for the Tsitsikamma (SANParks) and Robberg conservation fees.
  • Robberg's full circuit crosses exposed rocks. Check tides and wind, and start early.
  • Avoid driving long rural stretches after dark, and keep valuables out of sight in parked cars.
